| Galina Tyunina People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, Laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation
Upcoming Performances: Galina Tyunina began studying acting at a theatre studio in Troitsk while still at school. She later graduated from the I. A. Slonov Saratov Theatre School, where she studied under Valentina Yermakova. She spent the early years of her professional career at the Karl Marx Saratov Drama Theatre, working with director Alexander Dzekun. This collaboration played an important role in her artistic development. She then entered the acting department of GITIS, joining Pyotr Fomenko’s workshop. While still a student, she played Glafira in Alexander Ostrovsky’s “Wolves and Sheep” — a role that became legendary and entered the history of what would become the Pyotr Fomenko Workshop Theatre. After graduating, she joined the theatre’s original company and became one of the leading actresses in her teacher’s productions. Among her most significant roles under Fomenko’s direction were Anna Pavlovna Scherer, Countess Rostova, and Princess Marya in “War and Peace: The Beginning of the Novel”, and Olga in “Three Sisters”. Her performance in “War and Peace” earned her the Golden Mask National Theatre Award. A particularly important place in her artistic career is occupied by her longstanding collaboration with director Ivan Popovski. One of their earliest productions together was “The Adventure”, based on Marina Tsvetaeva’s work, in which Tyunina played Henrietta. Their creative partnership continued with productions including “The Fairground Booth”, “The Poisoned Tunic”, “Rhinoceros”, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, and others. Her portrayal of Lyubov Andreyevna Ranevskaya in “The Cherry Orchard” marked a new chapter in their collaboration. Alongside her theatre work, Galina Tyunina has built a distinguished career in film. One of her earliest and most notable screen performances was the leading role in Alexei Uchitel’s film “Giselle’s Mania”, in which she portrayed the legendary ballerina Olga Spessivtseva. She subsequently appeared in “His Wife’s Diary”, “Night Watch”, “Day Watch”, and other films. Theatre education also plays an important role in her professional life. Tyunina taught acting in Ivan Popovski’s class at GITIS. In 2025, together with Ivan Popovski and Kirill Pirogov, she recruited a new acting class at GITIS, continuing Pyotr Fomenko’s teaching tradition as a mentor to a new generation of performers.
